For many people, ‘carpet tiles’ can bring to mind small offices, high traffic areas and dull, lifeless colours. However, the team at Johnson Tiles would like to help you open your horizons – and bring carpet tiles to the home.

Carpet tiles are becoming reasonably popular as more and more people – particularly busy families – attempt to get in touch with their creative yet durable side. Carpet tiles are available in many different colours, and are highly durable with simple installation and replacement. What else could you ask for in a home with kids, spills and muddy boots?

Carpet tiles or carpet squares will suit many areas of the home. Playrooms and lounges are a great place to start, especially if you have young children. They can bring colour and creative flair to a busy area, and are easy to replace if damaged. Remember to select colours wisely!

If you have a zone in your home that requires a little bit of protection, but not complete cover-up, carpet tiles could be the answer. A strong alternative to rugs, carpet tiles can be laid creatively over tiles or floor boards to give the effect of a rug or feature piece of your home. A place for the children to play or pets to relax without the worry!

Be sure to come on in to Johnson Tiles, and check out our range of carpet tiles today!

When arriving at the tile store, you should have a clear idea of the area you wish to tile and the amount of foot traffic it will be exposed to.

Measure the floor and wall areas to be tiled. If the tiles are regular in size, then you should add no more than 10% to 15% for cuts, breakages and spares. Always order an extra 10% – 15%, even if you don’t use them, they will often be useful at a later date, if tiles are broken or damaged in the future. Ensure that you establish the tiling technique and pattern you will require, as this can make a difference to the amount of tiles you need.

Think about any accessories like soap dishes, step edges or brass strips to finish off your tiling and give you a professional looking project. If you have any queries, or are struggling to know how many tiles you will require, give the Johnson Tiles team a call today and we will help you out!

Are you curious as to how to look after your ceramic tiles? Johnson Tiles have some fantastic tips to help you make the most of your ceramic tiles.

It is always best to avoid abrasive cleaners, or any type of polishes or additives. They will only build up and cause problems in the future. Wash your tiles regularly using warm clean water with a little soapless, gentle household cleaner.

It may be possible that a very thin film of grout has been left on the surface of the tiles making them appear dull. In this case, we recommend the use of a heavy duty tile and grout cleaner, as this will get the best results. Make sure you rinse the floor throughly with clean water after this treatment, as reminants can damage the surface.

Tiles can become scratched by grit and dirt, especially highly glazed tiles. To minimise this, ensure a door mat is used just inside any exterior door. If you have very highly glazed floor tiles in you bathroom, avoid walking on them in footwear.

One or two tiles on your tiled floor may become chipped or cracked. It is best to ensure that you have kept some spares, as tile batches may vary in colour, so it’s very unlikely that you could ever match your tiles up a few years later.

These are some basic tile tips on how to look after your ceramic tile, and if you are requiring more specific answers, give Johnson Tiles a call today and we will help you out in any way we can!

The waterproofing system for your bathroom or shower must meet specific Australia standard building regulations. What system you use depends on the flooring material, whether there is a hob and the layout of the room.

You will require a waterproof membrane that is flexible, guaranteed for at least twenty years and chemically resistant. Some showers will never dry out, so it must be able to withstand being permanently and temporarily wet.

Bathrooms

Waterproofing for your bathroom tiles is best to be done by a professional, who will provide the necessary certificates and guarantees. In most bathrooms the joint between the wall and the floor needs to be sealed with a flexible, right-angled flashing fixed to the floor.

Showers

Showers are the weak link in the waterproofing process. Preformed and prefinished shower bases have few problems. In the event of a leak, check all of the timber architraves and door jambs for rot and steel jambs for rust.

Internal shower trays are usually put in over the hob and out onto the floor as well as inside the shower. They’re good if you’re renovating an existing bathroom. External shower trays are normally preformed in folded copper or heavy-duty PVC. They’re designed to be installed before the hob is put inside the tray.

For renovators, it pays to install a brand new shower and shower tray or replace an existing one that could get damaged when tiles are removed.

Hobless Showers

Hobless showers increase the risk of creating damp space. A brass or aluminium angle must be fixed to the floor under the shower screen, finishing at the height of the tiling. The bathroom floor must have a waste in the shower and another outside.

Tiling Around Baths and Basins

Water will leak behind a bath or basin unless the top rim is well sealed. In a new bathroom, wall linings are put in to overlap the rim of the bath and the joint sealed with a flexible silicone sealant. With existing tiles, use the same sealant.

Give Johnson Tiles a quick call today, and we will be happy to give advice regarding wet areas and waterproofing your tiles.
